User story estimates RRS feed

  • Question

  • Should I expect that the Original Estimate for a story will be the cumulative of the estimates for the story's associated tasks?  I think it would be nice for the stories to aggregate their dependent task's estimates for original and remaining.  It would be nice for this feature to work in TFS as well as the excel template.

Also, when I'm capacity planning on the Agile Iteration Planning walkthrough, the estimated work is 414 but I don't know what that relates to.  The remaining amount of work in the iteration backlog (for Iteration 2) totals 435.  This whole walkthrough gets a bit confusing when the iteration backlog lists 5 resources and we've only entered 3.  I guess the thought would be we'd need to remove work from this iteration until it met our capacity but the example doesn't take it all the way.

  • What you're referring to in your first question is what's called "rollup rules" - this isn't implemented in the current CTP but is something that the team is working on right now. The idea is that you could have a parent task's remaining work (or estimated work, etc.) be a summation of that parent's children. But the implementation details aren't quite final so I don't know exactly what the details will be yet. I would suggest looking for this in the beta.

As for the walkthrough, you may have found a bug in the walkthrough document. We're working on new ones now to go out with the beta. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the numbers in there right now, the main takeaway from those is to learn the mechanics of how the workbooks work.

Thanks for the feedback and for trying the CTP!
