Need to migrate 800TB data from on-premises to azure datacenter RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello Team,

can you please suggest a process to migrate 800TB data from on-premises to azure datacenter.

We have azure data box heavy in mind but need to know how data is processed without any files missing and need to capture metadata or some info.

    Any help on this?

    Regards,

  • For your scenario Data Box is the best option.

We need to have multiple details. Is that the VMs migration or just data migration? Do you need to migrate applications? what is that data and what does he need to accomplish by moving to Azure.
There are two main options to migrate data from on-premises to Azure. Learn more information around the processes and data migration best practices.

Migrate on-premises data to Azure: Refer to the suggestion mentioned in this article

Use Azure Migrate to migrate to Azure. Azure Migrate provides a centralized hub to assess and migrate on-premises infrastructure, applications, and data to Azure, with the following features, Azure Migrate is a features support for physical server, Virtual assessment and migration: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-in/services/azure-migrate/

Choose an Azure solution for data transfer This article provides an overview of some of the common Azure data transfer solutions. The article also links out to recommended options depending on the network bandwidth in your environment and the size of the data you intend to transfer.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hello Sumanth,

    Thanks for the details.

But we are migrating unstructured data to datatcenter. Hence wanted to use data box heavy option.

Also is there any way to check or to segregate copying data of less than 7 years ? To elaborate we have data which is old enough and wanted to move only less than 7 years.

    Thanks & Regards,

    Murali Krishna.

  • @Murali Krishna. Apologies for delay in responding here!

The Data Box has a BOM file that shows the file and CRC64 checksum. This file (along with the copy log file) can help determine what file got migrated by the Data Box to the storage account.

We are migrating unstructured data to Azure data center. Hence wanted to use data box heavy option.

Will the files goes to Blob? Heavy is an option, but it has specific physical requirements.

Also is there any way to check or to segregate copying data of less than 7 years ? To elaborate we have data which is old enough and wanted to move only less than 7 years.

My understanding from the question sounds like you need an application to help filter specific files to move with the Data Box?

  • @muthyala murali krishna. Apologies for delay in responding here! You need an external application outside the data box service in this scenario.

  • What kind of workload are these data part of? Are they backup/archival data?

Data Box is integrated with several partners applications that might be able to help. Here are a link to the Data Box partner page: https://cloudchampions.blob.core.windows.net/db-partners/PartnersTable.pdf.
