visual studio crashes when connecting to remote db RRS feed

I've been trying to figure this out for two days now.

This is the process I follow.

    Data Connections>Add Connection

    Enter Server Name
Use SQL Auth and enter credentials
    Enter db name.

When I hit enter here, it all goes to pot. Both VS10 and 13 crash.

I've confirmed port 1433 is open.

I've confirmed that Named Pipes and TCP/IP are enabled.

I have no problem connecting to the website with VS and manipulateing files.

I have no problem connecting to the same db using SSMS.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks
    Bob

    Hi forexbob,

When I hit enter here, it all goes to pot. Both VS10 and 13 crash.

What’s the error that your get?

Are there any error message in the Event Viewer? Please provide if it has.

Please try to connect to the local database and check the result.

If the VS crash instead of show connection error, I suggest that you could repair your VS.

I've confirmed port 1433 is open.

How do you open 1433 port?

You should add that port to the Inbound Rules of Windows firewall in the database server machine.

I have no problem connecting to the website with VS and manipulateing files.

Please provide the detail steps that you did.

I have no problem connecting to the same db using SSMS.

Are the SSMS installed in your local machine and use it to the remote database?

If so, I think there are sometthing wrong in your VS, please repair your VS.

On the other hand, please try to open the SQL Server Object Explorer in the VS (View=>SQL Server Object Explorer), then connect to the remote database.

    Thanks

    Best Regards
