Auto Expanding and Resizing Text Box RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

We have a requirement to create a similar text box which expands to insert multiple lines of data but then resizes to the orginal size of 60px wide. We would like to build some functionality when you could mouse over the text box and all text would appear. We do not want to use C# or an additional view for comments. We would like some sort of a workaround for a window to show all text or a self expanding test box. Not sure of this is possible and would appreciate any suggestions.

    Thanks
    Tony

  • You could use an optional section. Or, use rules to show/hide that comment field. The rule could use values from other fields or based on a checkbox that users will use to indicate if they want to include comments or not.

The above will just allow you to show/hide the field, not control the size of the text box. However, this approach shouldn't require redesigning the entire form.

    Hope that helps...

  • Hi Tony,

I don't think there's any out of the box way of accomplishing this. You may have seen already that you can set your text field to automatically expand vertically but there's no setting to have it expanded horizontally. Also, there's no option for setting it to specific size and then show full text on mouse over. You'll need to dive into coding for this, but you mentioned already you don't want to do this.

Why is that a requirement? May be someone can advise an alternative if you can you explain more.

  • Hi

Thanks for getting back to me. We basically have a small text box for including comments and we do not wnat to redesign the form as a comment is related to each column and this may be unneccessary. We do however want to give users the option to include as much details as possible in the comments area. We dont want the text box to auto expand as this affects the columns and rows.

If the box could auto expand and then shrink to its original size, this would be perfect. I suggested the idea of including a button which will direct the user to a comments view however this was not accepted.

Any ideas or suggestions, would be greatly appreciate. A think a redesign of the form maybe the only option as we are unskilled in writing C# code.

    Thanks
    Tony

  • Hi

We are ideally looking for something similar to an Excel comment box for InfoPath. I tried importing an excel spreadsheet with a comment box however this was unsuccessful. Appreciate any suggested workarounds?

    Thanks
