Why does VS keep reverting my settings?

    Question

  • I have used the Options -> Text Editor - All Languages -> General section to set line numbers and word wrap on for all languages.

Every few days, VS takes it upon itself to revert one or both of these settings to being off, which is very annoying.

Anyone any idea how I can persuade it to leave them as I want them?

Visual Studio 2015 Enterprise Update 3, on Windows 10 64-bit Pro with all latest updates.

    Thanks

  • Hi Mr Yossu,

Please check whether you have signed in your Visual Studio with an Microsoft account. Because sign in Visual Studio could help us synchronizes Visual Studio settings.

And please open your Visual Studio as administrator and set the line numbers, which can make sure it has enough permission to do any operations and could work for all uses that use this Visual Studio.

In addition, please try run your Visual Studio in safe mode to prevents all third-party VSPackages from loading when Visual Studio starts, thus ensuring stable execution.

Besides, please confirm you are using the same Windows account to login your machine. If you are use different Windows account login your machine, every user will create a new instance of Visual Studio with its own settings.

    Best Regards,
    Weiwei

I don't sign in to VS at all. Apart form the privacy issues, I don't see any benefit. I only use the one machine, so don't have any need to sync my settings anywhere.

And please open your Visual Studio as administrator and set the line numbers, which can make sure it has enough permission to do any operations and could work for all uses that use this Visual Studio.

I have done that and will see how it goes, but I doubt this is the issue. It doesn't have problems with anything else, just these two settings.

In addition, please try run your Visual Studio in safe mode to prevents all third-party VSPackages from loading when Visual Studio starts, thus ensuring stable execution.

Again, I doubt this is the issue, as I haven't changed my add-ins for ages, and have only recently seen the problem. I set line numbers and word wrap a long time ago, and it never got changed.

Besides, please confirm you are using the same Windows account to login your machine. If you are use different Windows account login your machine, every user will create a new instance of Visual Studio with its own settings.

I only have one Windows account on the machine.

Thanks for the reply, but I think you are on the wrong lines here. Any other ideas?

  • I am signed into Visual Studio, with Synchronize Settings turned on and I have this problem. So do a lot of people as can be seen here: https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/1651853/visual-studio-doesnt-save-keep-tabs-settings -- This issue has been closed as "Duplicate", but the fix that the MSFT commenter pointed at does not fix our problem (I am also on Update 3). Obviously this is a different bug with the same symptoms, but it is not getting past first level support to anyone who can fix it.

  • Sigh, like so many bugs, they just ignore it. Been there before.

I guess I just have to put up with it then. Thanks for the comment, at least I know not to expect any help from Microsoft.

  • Hi Mr Yossu,

Since there still other communities have this issue in current version of Visual Studio, I help you submit this issue to Visual Studio Connect. Please vote and add comments for this feedback. I think the product team will treat it seriously.

  • Hello Weiwei,

Thanks for the reply, but I have unmarked it as an answer, because it isn't. It's the promise of an answer, but not much of one.

Call me cynical if you like, but I've had plenty of experience with Connect, and its just a waste of time. Microsoft rarely do anything about the bugs reported there. Usually they close them as either "Fixed" (when they aren't) or "Will not fix" even if the fix is very simple.

In this case, they claim the bug is fixed in Update 3. Well, I've had that since it came out, and I still have the problem, so it's clearly NOT fixed.

Thanks anyway, but if you have a better suggestion, I would be happy to hear it. Connect just doesn't rate highly with me, especially in this case as the bug is clearly not fixed.

Ah, no I hadn't. I misread the previous stuff and thought the bug was fixed in Update 3. Didn't realise there was an update to the update :)

I've installed it now, so will see if the problem persists or not.

    Thanks for the reply.
