Yet another unable to install .Net 3.5 sp1 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi all,

I have spent the last 8 or so hours trying to get the .net 3.5 sp1 installed on my machine. (to run vs 2008)

I have read numerous posts on this forum, and on aaron stebner's blog, as well as on #vista on efnet, and different friends, all with no success (as outlined below)
I am running windows vista x64 SP1 with the SP1 added as a later update.
I have c:\program files and c:\program files (x86) set  up as symbolic links to my P:\ drive (if that matters)

When i first run the .net setup it failed rather quickly, giving the error

[12/07/08,03:23:46] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Error code 17 for this component means "The system cannot move the file to a different disk drive."
[12/07/08,03:23:46] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Component Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)' returned an unexpected alue.
[12/07/08,03:23:46] Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)': [2] Return from system messaging: The system cannot move the file to a different disk drive.
[12/07/08,03:24:09] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)' is not installed.

This rather confused me, as I believed that 3.0 was included with vista, as my later investigation confirmed.
I checked the control panel windows components window, and found that 3.0 was deselected. I tried re-selecting it, but at the end, it gave an error stating that "Some of the requested items could not be installed"

So i downloaded the redistributable copy of 3.0sp1 only to find that it said to use the control panel applet.

Next it was recomended that i try aaron's removal tool.

This tool also failed, and the log is here:
    http://rafb.net/p/iNZlY519.html

I do not have iss installed, nor do I, as far as i know, need it.

next i tried following his instructions here:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2007/03/26/how-to-repair-the-net-framework-2-0-and-3-0-on-windows-vista.aspx

i did everything on that page, removed the 2 updates in the add-remove updates app, even ran the removal tool again, and then tried to install the .net 3.5 sp1 again, using the 230 something MB redist file.

It took much longer this time, but still failed with the same error as when i started.

[12/07/08,03:24:09] WapUI: [2] DepCheck indicates Optional Component 'Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0 (x64)' is not installed.

you can see the full log file here:
    http://rafb.net/p/CM1TC126.html

So now after working nearly the entire night.. still no closer then when i started..

IS there anything that i am forgetting? overlooking? i dont know what to do else to make this work.

    Thanks alot,

  • The .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 and 3.0 SP1 packages are integrated into Windows Vista SP1, so they are not available separately in the Programs and Features control panel.

As you installed the standalone Windows Vista SP1 update package (as opposed to purchasing a computer with Windows Vista with SP1 pre-installed), you can attempt to repair or re-install Windows Vista SP1 to repair all components of SP1, including the .NET Framework 2.0 SP1 and 3.0 SP1.

    Thanks.

  • Alrighty, so i tried that:

first thing, was downloaded sp1 standalone 5 language x64

tried installing, and it said "sp1 is already installed"

so i thought, ok, lets tray removing it in control panel...

so, tried that... and what do you know, it says "An error has occurred,  not all the the updates were successfully uninstalled"

SO... control panel refuses to uninstall

    Standalone installer refuses to install....

    now what?

  • Please check out the Event viewer (type "eventvwr" in command prompt), to see if there is any error message related for more clues.

    Thanks.

  • Hi, thanks for your response,

I have been looking over the event log... all that seems to be logged is that fact that the  updates refused to be uninstalled..

If you can make any heads or tails of it, i have uploaded that section of the log to my web server,

    http://natescomputerscornwall.com/servicingevents.7z

i have 7zipped it.. as its 20 MB uncompressed, and 500KB in 7z

    Thanks alot

  • This can be an issue with the permission with the ServiceModel 3.0.0.0 registry key. Find the below link for more details
