One web.config, different default document for each virtual directory

Is it possible to assign a different default document for each virtual directory even if they all use the same codebase?

That's what I've done, but they each share the same web.config (effectively outdoing eachother). Besides, doesn't IIS just ultimately just save the setting changes to web.config?
