Server-side office automation and Autologon RRS feed

  • Question

  • This question is in regard to server-side automation of office  from non-interactive or unattended client applications.  In this context, there is a tool "Auto Logon for Windows v3.01"  from Microsoft. Can this tool be used to configure a user account to autologn to a server for user identity and to mimic an interactive login and run excel automation from applications like a Service or ASP.NET etc.? Is this a recommended approach? Are there any issues in following this approach to get around the server-side automation issues? Thanks.

  • Hi Ram,

For server side office automation, I suggest you refer Considerations for server-side Automation of Office.

Microsoft does not currently recommend, and does not support, Automation of Microsoft Office applications from any unattended, non-interactive client application or component (including ASP, ASP.NET, DCOM, and NT Services), because Office may exhibit unstable behavior and/or deadlock when Office is run in this environment.

What function do you want to achieve with Office automation? If you want to create or modify office file, I would suggest you try Open XML SDK 2.5 for Office.

    Best Regards,

    Edward
