Can we merge two separate 2-node windows cluster into one 4-node cluster in windows 2008 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, I have 1 separate cluster setup on 2-node windows cluster each on windows 2008 R2 server and have setup one SQL clustered instance on each cluster. I want to merge these 2 clusters into one and make it a 4-node SQL cluster.

Currently the procedure I have in mind is:

    1. Consider there is SQL A on Cluster A & SQL B on Cluster B. Inorder to move SQL B to Cluster A,

    2. Setup SQL B on Cluster A and migrate all databases from Cluster B to SQL B on Cluster A.

    3. Uninstall SQL B from Cluster B & uninstall Cluster from both the nodes on Cluster B.

    4. Add both the nodes to Cluster A to make it a 4-node cluster.

    5. Rename Cluster A.

Is there any better way to do this?

  • The above method worked for me. There isn't any direct way to merge 2 different clusters into a single cluster.

You need to uninstall cluster on one set of nodes and merge them to another cluster using "Add Node" in SQL setup.
