Clicking live tiles does nothing RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have installed 32-bit version on my HP netbook and installed without any problems. The issue I am facing is that except for IE and control panel, none of the live tiles launch when I click on them. During install I chose to keep my apps and settings.

IE and control panel load the respective apps. Anything I can do to fix the issue with rest of the apps.

  • There seem to be three possibilities when this happens (if you see more please keep reporting):

    1. Vertical screen resolution of the primary monitor < 768 pixels.  Metro Style apps won't run.  If this is your only monitor you are out of luck.  Please note that Windows 7 system requirement was >=768 pixels vertical resolution.  Below this some UI elements don't work well.

    2. A higher resolution monitor is attached, but it is not the primary monitor (where start menu and start screen appear).  One can:

        a) Use the "monitor with an arrow" icon on the secondary monitor's task bar to move the primary monitor to that display.

        b) Set your projection mode to display on the external monitor only.

    3. Sometimes logging off and back in, using a different user account, or rebooting fixes the issue.  This is being investigated.

As always thank you for reporting!

PS: Feedback heard that the diagnosis of the low resolution design needs to be more obvious.

  • l also have a similar problem. Only IE, Control Panel, Socialite and BUILD have worked well so far. All the others have blank screens or exit after a few seconds of trying to start up.

Installed x86 without keeping files. Screen resolution: 1680x1050.

  • Build and Socialite don't open for me, but otherwise the same.  IE and Control Panel work but that is about it.

  • Does your netbook meet the minimum screen resolution requirements? The vertical resolution needs to be at least 768px for Metro style applications to run.

  • Yes, that was it.

Go to the Desktop and change the resolution. fixed the problem.

  • Changing resolution has no effect for me.  I'm not on a netbook though I'm using a monitor at 1920x1200.

  • Same problem here. Tried all sorts of resolutions up to the 1920 x 1080 monitor default.

Also I don't see an onscreen keyboard when clicking in text box, just get blank black space at bottom of screen. Have added updates.

  • I experienced this also when suddenly I connected the netbook (native: 1024x600) to an HD monitor the apps started to work. I'm now running in 1920x1080. Try launching the apps through the Search menu. Win + F and select apps.

Is that your native resolution? When I first installed the OS it did not recognize my display driver so it defaulted at 800 x 600. I recommend downloading the Windows 7 display drivers for your netbook. Using Windows 8 in that resolution was awful.

  • Right, I created a new account with my LiveId. Logged off and then in using it and things seem to be working. Apps and the keyboard. Haven't tested them all but Socialite and Tweet@rama are go. Don't know if it's the Live log on or the new account.

  • I'm having the same issue. All the live tiles used to work but now for some reason are non-responsive when I click on them. I know it isn't my resolution as it worked before plus it's higher than the minimum resolution needed. I tried changing it to below the minimum and back to see if it would fix it and nothing. I also restarted my computer to see if that would help but it didn't. I'm gonna try the logging in under another account but I'm thinking that it is probably not going to work but hopefully it does and it lets me click the live tiles under the account I'm using now.
