  • Hello,

The Azure documentation states you need to allow Azure applications access in the Azure SQL DB firewall, although it does not specifically mention the "Allow access to Azure services" box:

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/sql-database/sql-database-firewall-configure#connecting-from-azure

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/data-factory/connector-azure-sql-database#supported-capabilities

In my own testing, my Azure SQL DB linked service in ADF began to fail test connections when I unchecked the "Allow access to Azure services" box, although there was a couple of minutes of lag between the time I unchecked it and the time the connections started failing.

  • Hi,

ADF linked services are connected via a concept called IR (short for "Integration Runtime").

If you choose to connect to your SQL Azure via an Azure IR, you will need to enable Allow Azure Services option. Alternatively, you can setup a self-host IR on a machine managed by your own. In the latter case, you don't need to enable Allow Azure Service but you'll still need to configure the SQL Azure's firewall to allow connection from your own machine's IP address.

Check out this document for more information on IR: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/data-factory/concepts-integration-runtime
