Accidently published Document in Content Type Hub; help! RRS feed

  • Question

  • In the Content Type Hub of SharePoint 2013 (Office365), I accidently published the default Document Content Type 'Document' with a custom template ("default document.docx").

As a result, all the default Site Content Types that have 'Document' as their parent, now have "default document.docx" as the default template. This screwed everything up. For example, when adding a new Enterprise wiki page, or page SharePoint tries to open "default document.docx" in stead of the correct (aspx?) page.

I unpublished Document. But the harm was already done to my Site Collections.

    How do I fix this?

Do I check all the Site Content Types that have Document as their parent and reset the document template for each, and publish the result? (if so, where can I find the correct template for each Site Content Type?)

Or, should I do something in my Site Collections as well?
Will publishing the default Site Content Types make it worse?

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Hi Jazztie,

For your issue, try to delete the custom template ("default document.docx") form the Document Content Type 'Document' and then published the default Document Content Type 'Document' again.

    Compare the results.

If the issue still exists, feel free to let me know.

  • Hi Lisa,

    Thank you for your suggestion.

    Before I republish 'Document' after deleting its template;
Wouldn't that overwrite the custom Sites Content Types I added to the Content Type Hub - and custom site content types in our Site Collections? I have many custom types, especially in a particular site collection.

  • Hi Jazztie,

After you deleted the template and republished 'Document' content type from content type hub, that will overwrite all the content types which use the document as parent content type in all sites.

Besides, you need to check all the Site Content Types that have Document as their parent and reset the document template for each. It is not recommend to change the default content type.

Eg, for Wiki Page content type, you need to add the following template one by one:

  • Hi Lisa,

Thanks so much for your help. Seems I have some work to do. :)

Is there a list of the default 'document templates' for all the site content types? I don't have the defaults any more (because they were overwritten with "default document.docx"). I've looked online, but unfortunately I couldn't find a list.... or is there a PowerShell-script someone that does it for me?

    Kind regards,

    Jazztie

  • Hi,

I list the document template of the content types which use document as parent content type:

    Report: /_layouts/CreateWorkbook.aspx

Web Part Page with Status List: /_layouts/spnewdashboard.aspx

    Rich Media Asset: /_layouts/15/Upload.aspx

    Basic Page: /_layouts/15/bpcf.aspx

    Link to a Document: /_layouts/15/NewLink.aspx

    Master Page: /_layouts/15/upload.aspx

    Master Page Preview: /_layouts/15/upload.aspx

    Picture: /_layouts/15/upload.aspx

    Web Part Page: /_layouts/15/spcf.aspx

    Wiki Page: /_layouts/15/CreateWebPage.aspx

    Hope that helps.

  • Hi Lisa,

    Thanks for the list.

I noticed that the following Site Content Types use 'Document' as their parent (or in the level above):

    • System Master Page (parent: Document)
    • System Page (parent: Document)
    • System Page Layout (parent: Document)
    • Form (parent: Document)
    • Page (parent: System Page)
    • Page Layout (parent: System Page Layout)
    • Publishing Master Page (parent: System Master Page)
    • Article Page (parent: Page)
    • Enterprise Wiki Page (parent: Page)
    • Redirect Page (parent: Page)
    • Welcome Page (parent: Page)
    • Project Page (parent: Enterprise Wiki Page)

The reason I mention this, is because these Site Content Types have also been overwritten by the 'default document.docx'-template. And therefor, don't work.

For example; creating a Enterprise Wiki Page doesn't work because of this. :(

Any idea what the default templates for these content types are?

(PS: if you have a complete list of all the possible content types and default templates in the CTH and on site collections, I would love to have it!)
