Here's a solution that did the trick for me: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/260527

  • I have tried using this solution and it has only worked once.  On 2 ocassion enabling the notification brought down the MSDTC resource and initiated a failover.  Is there something not mentioned here?  Like the batch file must reside in the quorum? or you need to use a .bat and not a .cmd?

  • You can also use snmp traps to monitor the state of cluster resources and groups. This trap is then sent to a monitoring application(we use sitescope) which then sends out an email alert.

You can set snmp traps on different states of cluster resources like a resource going offline, a resource coming online, a resource trying to failover etc.
