# Calculated lines

• Hi, I have got following question: I have got a scatter plot showing time on x-axis and the values on the y-axis. and I need to add 2 lines: a) the average of all the points shown and b) a control line, for which I need to calculate the average of the 2point moving range of all points shown.

Example:

The graph shows following points: 5; 7; 8; 4; 4; 5

So I would need to add the average line = 5.5 over the whole period.

And I would need to be able to calculate the average moving range, ie the average of (2,1;4;0;1)

resulting from (abs(7-5); abs(8-7); etc etc) = 1,6 and multiply that with a constant c and add it to the average, so that the second line becomes 5,5 + c*1,6

over the whole period shown.

Any way this is doable?

(not a RS specialist, just asking as a project leader who got the info from the RS guy in my team that above is not feasible)

• Hi miluc,

If I understand correctly, you want to display a Mean line that shows the average of all points, and display a Moving average line that shows the average of every two adjacent points in the scatter chart. If in this scenario, we can try to add two calculated series to achieve the goal. For more details, please see:

1. Right-click the field to select ‘Add Calculated Series’ option in the Values pane.
2. Select Mean as the Formula.
3. Right-click the field to select ‘Add Calculated Series’ option in the Values pane.
4. Select Moving average as the Formula.
