Connecting to an SQL Server 2008 R2 database with System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello ! I am trying to connect to an MSSQL 2008 R2(SQLexpress) database with System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll. I can't find any info on the connectionstring syntax. Is it even possible to use this dll as a connection for the above database !?

  • Then try http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/categories and search for embedded. It seems you have two forums for this. Have you tried to see if System.Data.SqlClient is available in the Framework you are targetting ?

Not sure how this PC is connected to a network else another resort would be perhaps to call a web service (of course the SQL Server Express db is on another machine ?). IMO a Windows embedded forum will be more helpfull than a general ADO.NET forum.

  • How do you connect to the database? What project are you building? In Entity Framework, the wizard can lead you to configure the edmx file, where do you need this dll?

Fighting like Allen Iverson. Neve give up!

  • Hi,

This DLL is for use with SQL Server Compact Edition which is a file based simplified db compared with SQL Server Express. So use http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.data.sqlclient.aspx for SQL Server Express.

As always it's best to have a basic idea of what you are trying to do. If you are trying to have some code that could work with SQL Server CE or SQL Server Express try perhaps http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/wda6c36e.aspx (DbProviderFactories).

  • Hi, I am doing this in an application called IX-Developer. This is a software for HMI developement(GUI between an operator and a PLC). The application is running on a industrial PC with Windows Embedded. The script language for this application is C#. A i am not sure if there is any restrictions in IX-Developer environment. I have an example from the manufacturer of the IX-Developer that was made with the SqlServerCe.dll. The example makes a connection to a .sdf file localy in my project. But i need to connect to a full MS SQL Server database engine.

  • Hello again ! The PC is connected over ethernet to another PC that runs the SQL Server. It so happens that my supplier (in between our messages) has sent me a new example. He had missunderstod what type of application i was deploying. And guess what the new example was using, System.Data.SqlClient! So i think your suggestion is the right way to try ! Thank you very much Peter
