Migration of WordBasic Templates RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We have a application with many WordBasic templates which are used along with Visual Basic 6.0 application to generate documents on the fly. The data sent to these documents can be in multiple langauges. We are now planning to move to latest technology stack. The options are either to move to Winforms application or Web Based application using .Net with back end as SQL Server 2008

In both Winform and Web based application scenario what are the options for WordBasic. What the the various options that we can consider to move away from WordBasic and use the latest technology advancements.

Would appreciate your inputs on the same.

    Thanks

  • Hi Alok

This is a bit difficult to analyze without more information on what the WordBasic part of the equation is doing...

I suppose the place to start is: is any user interaction required in the Word application interface? Or would all user interaction be at the "Forms" level? The WordBasic is currently used to generate documents?

If that's the case, then you should be looking at the Open XML file format, which will allow you to generate documents "from scratch", without needing to interact with the Word application at all. For example, you can create documents "server-side" then send them to the user - no need to even have Word installed on the server. You can find more information on this approach at OpenXMLDeveloper.org
