Error opening explorer from MDS web page RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am having problems opening explorer within our live environment.  Dev and UAT work with no issues.  I'm at a bit of a loss what else to try.  I have gone through these two links I have found but neither seemed to help through the seem to be related to the same problem that I am seeing.

    social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/eafef2b5-11cb-4760-814e-2e7211122c7d/httpwebrequestwebexceptionremoteserver-error-when-opening-mds-explorer?forum=sqldenmds

    algour.com/2013/09/10/mds-issue/

When opening explorer we just get this pop up error message.  This has definitely worked in the past and as far as I'm aware nothing has been changed in the configuration.

    [HttpWebRequest_WebException_RemoteServer]
    Arguments: NotFound
    Debugging resource strings are unavailable
Often the key and arguments provide sufficient
    information to diagnose the problem.
    See http://....................

Would anybody be able to provide any advise or point me in the direction of any documentation regards configuring the webconfig and applicationhost files that the links above seem to suggest updating ?

    Thanks,

    Lee.

  • Hi Lee,

Which version of MDS are you using?

Based on my research, the issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server.

In your scenario, please try to apply the latest SP and CU and check if this issue persists or not. After installation is complete, you have to open Master Data Services Configuration Manager so that you can upgrade the MDS database.

    1. Click Databases , and then click Select Database.
    2. Connect to the database that you want to upgrade. When the database is selected, you receive the following message: This database requires an upgrade. You cannot change system settings until the database is upgraded.
    3. Click Upgrade Database. The Upgrade Database Wizard opens. Follow the instructions in the wizard to upgrade the database and then click Finish.

    Regards,

  • When you open MDS Configuration manager does it say:

The required .svc handler mappings are not installed in IIS. Check if WCF Services HTTP Activation is enabled.

If so, check to ensure that it is activated (Under features .Net 4.5/WCF Services), if it is activated, uninstall it and reinstall it (with the requisite reboots between each step). Also have you installed the latest CU?

I fixed this issue by uninstalling and reinstalling HTTP Activation

  • Hi Sandeep,

no need for creating from scratch and restoring . the cause is mainly due to HTTP activation . please follow DANR427 suggestion

  • BTW the false positive error was fixed in the latest SQL 2016 CU, at least it fixed it for me

  • Hi,

I could overcome the above error by creating the MDS database in 2016 directly instead of restoring from 2012 and then upgrading to 2016. I have then migrated all the mds model packages from 2012 to 2016. Thanks

  • Hi,

Is there a permanent solution for this problem. I'm facing this issue more often and need to uninstall and reinstall the HTTP activation each time.
