  • In any virtualization environment, when you have dynamic virtual disks, they grow as needed.

In your case you are expecting them to also shrink on demand?

This is normally not the case.

There are lots of reasons for temporary growth in the files or the size of files in any machine.  But as files come and go, the disk has to accommodate.  So the disk expands.

Also, older applications have a tendency to write to the end of a disk.  This causes dynamic virtual disks to expand with blank blocks to handle that.

In the end, a dynamic virtual disk (no matter who's format) is not a collection of files.  It is a representation of the block layout of a physical disk.  And behaves the same, and the VM treats it as the same.

Perform a defragmentation, then shrink your disk. - this is always a good place to begin.
