Bing Maps Geolocation API returning wrong coordinates when searching for the town Hilter

    Question

  • Hello together,

I'm not sure whether this is the right place or not, but I have no idea where to post elsewhere, so I thought that this form may be a good idea.

I've experienced some odd behavior when using the Bing geolocation service:

When searching for the German town "Hilter" in Bing Maps directly, the town "Hilter im Teutoburger Wald" with the Zip-Code 49176 is returned.

However, if I use the geolocation API and provide the same search term, another town - different to the one from Bing Maps, with the wrong coordinates is returned.

    For example, compare

    http://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/v1/Locations?q=HILTER%20,Germany&key=<Private Bing Maps Key>

    http://dev.virtualearth.net/REST/v1/Locations?q=Hilter%20am%20Teutoburger%20Wald,Germany&key=<Private Bing Maps Key>

In the first case, keyword is "Hilter" and bing returns latitude 51.1218070983887 and longitude 10.4006948471069
In the second case the keyword is "Hilter am Teutoburger Wald" and bing returns the correct latitude 52.1392211914062 and longitude 8.14591979980469.

Can someone explain me, why Bing maps and the geolocation API behave different in this case? And if there is a possible solution to fix this and get the right coordinates, using the search keyword "Hilter"?

Many thanks for your help in advance.

    Kind regards,

    Christian
