Visual Studio 2013 with SSRS 2008 R2 RRS feed

  • Question

  • 2 questions really for a while we have been developing and maintaining our SSRS project with Visual Studio 2008 on an SSRS 2008 R2 server but we have upgraded to Visual Studio 2013 on all but one of our Virtual Machines. Can I edit a project created in VS 2008 for an SSRS 2008 R2 server?

I have a migration plan for our database server and I am wondering how do we go about updating the project for SSRS 2014?

  • Yes, you can use SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2013 to create reports for 2008 R2.  You can also open BIDS projects and the new version of visual studio will convert them for you. A wizard pops up and does it for you.  It creates backup files during the process but you can also make a copy and covert that just to be safe until you are comfortable with it all...

  • Hi Gary,

    1. Can I edit a project created in VS 2008 for an SSRS 2008 R2 server?

Yes, like JJordheim mentioned, you can edit the project created in Visual Studio 2008 for SSRS 2008 R2 using Visual Studio 2013.

    2. I have a migration plan for our database server and I am wondering how do we go about updating the project for SSRS 2014?

Based on my understanding, the project is created on SSRS 2008 R2, but now you have upgraded SSRS 2008 R2 to SSRS 2014, then you want to update the project, right?

In Reporting Services, the only way to upgrade a report definition file is open the report in SSDT or Report Designer. In your scenario, since the project is created in the earlier version of the SSRS, you should open the project in Visual Studio 2013 within SSRS 2014 to upgrade all reports. For more information, please refer to this article: Upgrade Reports .

If you have any question, please feel free to ask.

    Best regards,
