Index vanishes and '-secondary' index appears RRS feed

  • Question

  • Yesterday I created an index in Azure Search. Today that index is gone, but index of same name with ‘-secondary’ appended is there instead. Why?

  • Could you please provide some more details that might help us understand the nature of the problem?

    1. What is the name of your search service? With this detail, we can attempt to see any operations initiated by the service and figure out what's going on.

    2. Where you seeing this issue only on the portal? Did you attempt to use the list indexes API (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/rest/api/searchservice/list-indexes) and see if that produces a different result?

  • API returns the same six indexes as the portal.

  • Originally, these eleven indexes appeared in the portal:

    sitecore-core-index
    sitecore-master-index
    sitecore-web-index
    sitecore-marketingdefinitions-master
    sitecore-marketingdefinitions-web
    sitecore-marketing-asset-index-master
    sitecore-marketing-asset-index-web
    sitecore-testing-index
    sitecore-suggested-test-index
    sitecore-fxm-master-index
    sitecore-fxm-web-index

    Today, these six appear:

    sitecore-core-index-secondary
    sitecore-master-index-secondary
    sitecore-web-index-secondary
    sitecore-marketingdefinitions-master-secondary
    sitecore-marketing-asset-index-web-secondary
    sitecore-suggested-test-index-secondary

  • I was able to look at our telemetry and found the following "user-initiated" operations with respect to indexes, all that occurred in a matter of few minutes around 28 hours ago

    Create sitecore-core-index
    Create sitecore-suggested-test-index
    Create sitecore-master-index
    Create sitecore-web-index
    Create sitecore-marketingdefinitions-master-secondary
    Create sitecore-marketingdefinitions-web-secondary
    Create sitecore-marketingdefinitions-master

    Delete sitecore-marketingdefinitions-master-secondary

    Create sitecore-master-index-secondary
    Create sitecore-core-index-secondary
    Create sitecore-web-index-secondary
    Create sitecore-suggested-test-index-secondary
    Create sitecore-marketingdefinitions-master-secondary

    Delete sitecore-marketingdefinitions-master
    Delete sitecore-core-index
    Delete sitecore-suggested-test-index
    Delete sitecore-web-index
    Delete sitecore-master-index

The following indexes that you listed have never existed for that service, so I'm don't think it would've ever shown up on the portal?"sitecore-testing-index","sitecore-marketing-asset-index-master","sitecore-marketing-asset-index-web","sitecore-fxm-master-index","sitecore-fxm-web-index"

How are you managing your indexes and azure search service? From our telemetry, the state of the service and the indexes seem to be consistent with user request.

  • Thanks.

    What about these?:

    sitecore-core-index
    sitecore-master-index
    sitecore-web-index

    Where did they go?
