Will reinstalling all my .NET Framework instances on a Windows 2003 server crash SQL Server 2005? RRS feed

  • Hi All

I have a windows 2003 server that constantly fails it's windows updates. Currently the following happens in the windows update dialogue box:-

    15/03/2011

    Initializing installation... done!
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP for x64-based Systems (KB982168) (update 1 of 10)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP for x64-based Systems (KB2418241) (update 2 of 10)... failed!
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x64 (update 3 of 10)... failed!
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP for x64-based Systems (KB976570) (update 4 of 10)... failed!
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP for x64-based Systems (KB982524) (update 5 of 10)... failed!
Installing Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 on Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 for x64-based Systems (KB2416473) (update 6 of 10)... failed!
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Security Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP for x64-based Systems (KB979909) (update 7 of 10)... failed!
Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 4 (KB2463332) (update 8 of 10)... failed!
Installing Security Update for .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP for x64-based Systems (KB983583) (update 9 of 10)... failed!
Installing Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP for x64-based Systems (KB976569) (update 10 of 10)... failed!

The problem is, the updates bring down SQL Server service as part of the attempted update, and since that's at 5am I have to start the services when I get to work. It's a test server so it's not a massive issue - I actually get round it by scheduling a daily reboot for 6am - but when I push this updates on to our live SQL Server machine I want to know they're actually going to work.

However, I've checked in my add/remove programs list, and I have the following .NET installs

    .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 version 2.2.30729

    .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 v 3.2.30729

    .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 - can't find a version number but I have installed updates/hotfixes KB958484/KB963707/KB953595

The machine is windows 2003 standard x64 sp2, with 2.66GHZ processor and 16GB ram.

I'm very tempted to use Aaron Stebner's blog instructions to remove all versions of the .NET framework and reinstall allof the from the ground up. But here's the big question- If I unistall and reinstall all .NET Frameworks, will it affect my SQL Server 2005 instance?

I'm currently running SQL Server 2005 version 9.0.4053, which i believe is SP3

If anyone has any other advice regarding these updates, please let me know!

I have some development working starting soon, so I want to make this server as stable as possible.

    Thanks alot! Jim Smith
