Network connectivity lost on windows 10 upgrade followed by uninstallation of network filter driver RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a desktop application which also installs a network filter driver. Installation/uninstallation are done through a .msi package. When I perform following steps in order network connectivity is lost.

    1. Install the said application in Windows 10 1709.
    2. Upgrade windows 10 to version 1803.
    3. Uninstall the application.
    4. Reboot machine.

After reboot network connectivity is lost. When I run 'sc query' command on the network filter driver service, I can still see service is present but in stopped state.

I can no longer see ethernet adapter under network connections. Opened device manager to check what's wrong. I can see a warning symbol on ethernet's network adapter. Enabling/disabling adapter didn't help. But uninstalling/reinstalling ethernet adapter driver brought back the network connectivity.

Even though uninstalling/reinstalling ethernet adapter driver works, I want to know what is the actual reason for losing network connectivity.
