Data base design from Excel RRS feed

  • I am attempting to explain the importance of a relational database to my engineering dept.  We have an excel spreadsheet with 75 columns that was directly imported into one SQL table.  I was trying to explain how we need to clean up the data (misspelling of words/ multiple spellings/ wrong data) and create a database that has multiple table with attributes specific to that table, and reduce redundancy that i am seeing from just taking an excel spreadsheet and dumping this into one large table.  The reason i am trying to explain this to them is because i need their help to identify the common attributes they are storing.  Is there any good documentation that would help explain this better than what i might be able to explain again and have them tell me that this is the way it needs to be one table with 75 fields.
