Sql server 2016 Enterprise Licencing for mirroring or always On RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I have one server with Sql server 2016 enterprise licenced. I want to create a mirroring or always On process with an other server. Does this other server need a licence as it will be in passive mode ? I don't have software assurance on this Sql server.

    Thanks in advance

  • Hi Macc86,

    >>Does this other server need a licence as it will be in passive mode ?

From the blog SQL Server License Allocation.

SQL Server’s HA features include clustering, log shipping, mirroring and availability groups; these features impact SQL Server licensing requirements.  For example, the secondary ‘passive’ node in a SQL availability group does not require its own SQL Server license as long as it is only functioning in a secondary role and does not allow secondary connections.

But the issue is more about SQL server license, I suggest that you consult professionals in this area. please call 1-800-426-9400, Monday through Friday, 6:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (Pacific Time) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing specialist. Or you can go to Volume Licensing Service Center support. Please choose region/language and choose to call or have web. People there will help you more effectively.
    Hope this could help you.

    Best regards,

If you have Software Assurance and if Secondary replicas are non readable you do not have to pay license for it.
