  • Hi Suresh,

According to the error message “SQL Server Database Services 2005 (MSSQLSERVER)  Setup cannot update SQL Server Database Services 2005 x86 on this computer. To proceed, run the Hotfix Setup program for the x86 platform instead”, there are some possibilities and workaround like below, would you please kindly take a look and to see if they can solve your problem?

    ·         Since this is 32 bit SQL Server on 64 bit OS, would you please kindly check if the hotfix is for 32bit SQL Server? Because normally the installation detect that which platform(for example: X32bit or X64bit) you are currently using, if it detect that you are using x64 bit OS, it will only show hotfixes file for 64 bit. To get all setup hotfixes, we can try the following steps:

                      1. Click "View and request hotfix downloads"

                      2. In the page coming up, please click "Show hotfixes for all platforms and languages"

Please check the information in the following link and find the proper hotfixes for the upgrade:

Cumulative update package 7 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976951

    ·         Please check if there is any instance had already upgraded from 4035 to 4053, this will cause the problem too. We can check the summary.txt file under installation log folder to get it. Please refer to the link about how to view Setup log files below.

    ·         Are you installing the SQL Server SP3 CU7 on a cluster server? If this is the case, would you please PAUSE the other cluster node, and then install the SP3 CU7 again?

Finally, would you please collect the error messages logged into the setup log files which are located in the %Program files%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup bootstrap\Log\ folder. This will help us to troubleshoot the issue.

For more information about how to View and Read SQL Server Setup Log Files, please see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702(v=SQL.90).aspx

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask.

    Thanks,

    Grace

Please kindly mark the answer if it is a workaround. Thanks a lot *^_^*

  • Are you sure you got the right file?  Try
    SQLServer2005SP3-KB955706-x86-ENU.exe
    from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=ae7387c3-348c-4faa-8ae5-949fdfbe59c4.
