Blind developer has problems with getting a Windows Store App developer licence RRS feed

  • Question

  • When starting with a new 'Windows Store App' project in Visual Studio 2012 Professional (New Project | Templates | JavaScript | Windos Store | eg. Blank App) I am asked to get a Win8 App developer licence. After confirmation Visual Studio opens two windows. One for the getting the licence and a second for creating the application (Name: AppNo). Unfortuntely the log-in window for getting the licence is out of focus. With ALT+TAB I can get the focus for ordering a licence, but I can not switch with key combinations to the entry fields for userid  and password.

Both screen readers JAWS for Windows8 and NVDA report the same problem.

I wounder, if other blind persons are using Visual Studio 2012 and whether Microsoft support staff could help me.

    Best regards

  • Hi HDPB,

Thanks for reporting this. I can reproduce the problem on both Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Using the keyboard and narrator I can find the "Developer License" dialog, but the focus appears to be trapped in root window pointing at the login web page. I'll file a bug on this.

The only way I was able to use the dialog was by setting focus with the mouse or touch. I was able to use Narrator's mouse mode to find the window. Once I click on it I can use the keyboard to tab to the account and password fields.

Please let me know if that gets you unstuck or if you still need an immediate solution while we're investigating the root bug.

  • Hi HDPB,

I have no clue why you lose the focus on your login windows, might be the issue with easy access tools(I did not test).

Another idea is you could try to get developer license by command promote, take a look at this documentation: Get a developer license. Below is the sample:

    C:\PS> Show-WindowsDeveloperLicenseRegistration
    C:\PS> Get-WindowsDeveloperLicense
    C:\PS> Unregister-WindowsDeveloperLicense

Hope it can work for you, at least you would not meet the problem with not selecting the correct dialog box.

    Best Regards,

  • Hello Rob ,

thank you for your answer. With help by of a seeing person, I managed to get a license, that is valid until 16th november.

Next week I will test the userbility of visual studio 2012 by keyboard and would like to report the results. The usage of this forum by keyboard is for me, as a blind person, to difficult. I would prefer the for reporting of feedbacks by email. My Email adress is: hdpnews@outlook.de
