Service starts itself RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • I have a .NET Service that was installed on a Windows 2003 Server by a .NET Installer Project package (msi).
It had some bugs and we had to shut it down for a period of time. Unfortunately, we noticed that from time to time it would start itself, even if we put it to Disabled state.
We noticed this Event Log entry:

    Event Type:    Information
    Event Source:    Service Control Manager
    Event Category:    None
    Event ID:    7040
    Date:        11/20/2008
    Time:        6:55:43 AM
    User:        NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer:    COMPUTER01
    Description:
The start type of the Message Sender service was changed from disabled to auto start.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

    - Then it was followed by:

    Event Type:    Information
    Event Source:    Service Control Manager
    Event Category:    None
    Event ID:    7035
    Date:        11/20/2008
    Time:        6:55:43 AM
    User:        NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
    Computer:    COMPUTER01
    Description:
The Message Sender service was successfully sent a start control.

I believe it has something to do with the InstallState, and somehow Windows tries to restore the Service to its last known state.
This is happening over and over approximately on a 6 hour interval of time.

Does anyone know why is this happening and how to prevent it from happening?

  • Have you checked the Recovery property page for the service in the Services.msc Control Panel and verified that the recovery is set up as you expect?
