Caution exclamation marks on word documents

Question

I have been having trouble with my computer recenlty.  I thought I had the problems solved, but I turned on my computer one day and found that all my Word documents as well as Adobe documents had a red circle with a white exclamation mark in front of it.  What does this mean? and how do I fix it?
