cannot install .net framework 4.0 ?! RRS feed

  • Question

  • i waited the whole afternoon for the .net 4.0 to finish installation and it just don't proceed. now it stopped at the '.net framework 4.0 extended. I tried canceling it and then  reinstalling but it's still the same...

    i'm running windows xp sp3 on a core 2 duo t5500.

is this normal?! or is there anything wrong with my computer?

the cpu ultilization is around 1% and  hard drive ultilization is around 10kb/s ....

china is very hot now...will that affect the installation?!

    what's wrong?

    thanks!

ps: no errors, no warnings, other apps runs well

  • Hi New_WC,

    Thank you for your post.

Firstly, .NET Framework 4.0 is supported on the following Windows XP related OS:

    Windows XP Home Edition SP3
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP3
    Windows XP Professional SP3

For more information on the system requirements of .NET Framework 4.0, please check:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7&displaylang=en#Requirements
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8z6watww.aspx

Thus, please check whether you have installed the right version of Windows XP SP3.

If your OS supports .NET Framework 4.0, could you please help me to try the following steps one by one to install .NET Framework 4.0?

    - Download .NET Framework 4.0 Standalone installer
Note: You can try some download manager software to help downloading.
    - Run the installer to install .NET 4.0 with Administrator Privilege
Note: Right-click the installer >> "Run as Administrator"

If the problem still exists, could you please follow the following steps to collect the log files?

    - Try to clean your "%temp%" folder (Start Menu >> Run >> Type "%temp%")
    - Install .NET Framework 4.0
(The installer must be run with administrator privileges)
    - Collect the logs from "%temp%" folder
       Collect tool: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e0da314f-6216-4a18-bc6b-7d29cf83af20&displaylang=en
    - Send vslogs.cab file to me (v-yicche@microsoft.com)
Note: Please attach the link of this post in the mail.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,
    Yichun Chen

  • So how did you solve this?

I am seeing a similar issue. In my case the installer won't even start. It does not show any UI or error message. I am using XP professinal with SP3.

This is what the log file looks like from Temp folder:

The folder mentioned in the last line above does get created but it is empty.

  • Hi There,

I saw this thread when I began investigating why I can't get .net Framework v4.0. installed on my PC.

Can you provide any help or the resolution steps that were performed for the original poster as I'm experiencing the same problem?

I've pasted in the log file contents below, there's not much to it but it seems it can't complete the extraction process.

I've verified the downloaded install file, used a redistributable client installer a vendor supplied with their software but still the same error.

    Brian

  • Hi,

I got into the exact same situation as BrianThomson and Piyushjbms.

    This is my log:

  • Hi, I found a solution in this post:

    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/netfxsetup/thread/fc91f96f-3216-4f2b-85af-f051682760fe

You need to extract dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe using any archive utility (such as WinZip); After extracting, you need to run the extracted "setup.exe" program with the "/x86" flag

(e.g, via Command Line, assuming the extracted 'Setup.exe' is in your "C" drive:

    c:\> Setup.exe /x86

    )

  • Wasted way too much time trying to get this to install on Server 2003. Extracting and running setup.exe /x86 worked... thank you!!
