Is Windows Container inside Windows Container possible? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I'm trying to run a Windows Container inside a Windows Container but getting the following error when I try to start dockerd:

    time="2016-06-18T12:00:22.517030600-07:00" level=info msg="Windows default isolation mode: process"
    time="2016-06-18T12:00:22.536841800-07:00" level=error msg="Failed to load vmcompute.dll: The specified module could not be found."
    time="2016-06-18T12:00:22.537854900-07:00" level=fatal msg="Error starting daemon: Couldn't restore custom images: Failed to restore base images: Failed to load vmcompute.dll: The specified module could not be found."

    Is it possible to run Windows Container inside another Windows Container?

  • I don't think that nesting containers makes sense.  Containers are supposed to be light weight. I wouldn't even head down this road. Thing more along the lines that maybe a container host can be a VM that might have many container hosts.  What are you trying to accomplish with this nesting?

  • @Ryan, I tried, of course. But it doesn't help. See the error message above.

  • @Frank, Agree, it doesn't make a lot of sense in production. The initial motivation is fun. I can think of applying it in End-to-end testing.
