2008 sp2 virtual server network and sharing area blank, connectivity via pings fine, remote desktop broken.. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a virtual server, called vsocs02.. its an office communication server 2007 R2 server.. there were a bunch of updates waiting to be installed the other day, so i ran them, one of them being the communications server patch (i dont think the patch is to blame, because the issue was going on just after main set of updates minus the comm. server one)..

Now, the server rebooted, i can ping it, browse its drives remotely.. from within the box i can ping the web, other servers..

But, if i try to goto network and sharing center, i just get a blank page.. (also communicator services wont start).. i've rebooting/shutdown the vm multiple times, i'm not sure what is going on here..

Has anyone ran into this before?

    Thanks

  • If i boot into safe mode with networking there is no issue.. i can bring up networking in control panel without it "freezing" and the network icon is normal and not x'd out..

These are the updates i ran in the last day:

    Update for ms windows kb971737
    Secruity updates for ms windows:
    kb970430
    KB954155
    KB956744
    KB961501
    KB967723
    KB968816
    KB969947
    KB970238
    KB971486
    KB971557
    KB971657
    KB971961
    KB972270
    KB973507
    KB973525
    KB973565
    KB974318
    KB974571
    KB975467
    KB975517
    KB976325

    update for ms windows:
    kb960362
    kb968389
    kb972036
    kb973687
    kb973917
    kb976098
    kb976470

    windows management framework bits kb960568
    win management core kb968930

I'm pretty sure what has caused the problem is one of the above, but i'm not sure how to fix this.

  • I removed these

    kb976470
**windows management framework bits kb960568  (couldnt be removed)
    win management core kb968930
    update for ms win kb971512
    update for ms win kb971513

Now the network settings in control panel are working..

Removing the core alone didnt fix it.. so its one of these:
    update for ms win kb976470
    update for ms win kb971512
    update for ms win kb971513

Any thoughts as to why this occurred?
