SSMS hosed - uninstall hang and reinstall does not work either RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an SQL Server 2017 CU14 DB server with the most current SSMS18.0.   SSMS is hosed, and was originally fine.  SSMS will not uninstall (just hangs) will not reinstall, and debugging steps yield no results.  Is there a manual way to delete SSMS fully and reinstall?  I have this same exact setup on another server without and issues, and SSMS 17.x from a client desktop works fine showing the DBMS is fine on this DB server and just SSMS is broken.

    Additional details & debugging attempted:

SSMS connections from my desktop connects fine.

Fix #1 states to – run sfc /scannow in powershell then reboot (no errors and this did not help resolve anything)

Fix #2 to check the machine.config file under .NET (missing on SQLSEC8DEV)

    1. SSMS uninstall does nothing
    2. SSMS reinstall does nothing
    3. machine.config seems missing on this db server (see link above)
    4. Coping the machine.config from another server is blocked on write
    5. SSMS connections hang and eventually error with "Configuration system failed to initialize (System.Configuration)”

    I appreciate any assistance!
