VS2010 IntelliSense suddenly not working anymore RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

    I'm using VS2010 with C++ and find the intellisense feature very helpfull.
    Unfortunately this feature stopped working completely.
    When I try to get the list of available member variables by typing "<Ctrl> + <Space>"
    I get  "Intellisense: 'No additional information available'".

    I already tried some hints described in related articles but they did not help.

    Here is what I have tried so far
    1. delete sdf-File and let VS rebuild it.
    2. devenv /resetsettings
    3. devenv /resetuserdata
    4. Create a simple project
        The project contains  a simple C++ class containing a single member variable (see below).
        The project compiles without any errors but intellisense does not work.

    #include "stdafx.h"
    class CMyClass
    {
    public :
        int m_nValue;
    };

    int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[])
    {
        CMyClass mc;
        mc.m_nValue=0;
        return 0;
    }

    Any hint is appreciated.

  • Hi Sunny,

    thanks for your answer.

    1. Yes, I have VisualStudio 2010 ServicePack 1  installed.
    Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Professional - DEU Service Pack 1 (KB983509)   KB983509

    2. Yes, I have the same VS IntelliSense settings.

    3. Typing "Ctrl + J" does not work, I still get the same message "Intellisense: 'No additional information available'".

    In the meanwhile I compared the folder contents of my simple project against a PC where IntelliSense is working correctly. It turned out, that on my PC the "ipch" folder is missing. I found a hint on this issue here
    "http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/652838/intellisense-not-creating-ipch-folder"
    followed the instructions and my problem was solved :-)

    Thanks again for your fast response.

  • Hi behnkjoc,

    First, VS2010 SP1 must be installed. Please have a check.

    Second, please make sure that auto list members has been selected.

    (1)Tools->Options->Text Editor (2) click C/C++ (3) select Auto list members

      Refer to screenshot below:

    Last, write your code and typing "Ctrl+J" when you try to get the list of available member variables.

    Please feel free to let me know if they don't work.

  • It seems the recent Windows update KB2876217 disabled intellisense on some systems (I was affected as well).

    It seems MS did not notice it, yet. For some more information see here:

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/18798270/vs2010-intellisense-problems

    You could try to uninstall it in order to see if that's also your problem.
