XAML designer crashes with RemotingException

    Question

  • Hello all,

I just upgraded my new Lenovo Yoga 500 laptop from its originally installed Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, and then installed Visual Studio Community 2015. So, fresh machine, fresh OS.

Now, I created a HelloWorld project, and opened the MainPage.xaml page. Designer begins to load, but immediately crashes with the following trace:

    System.Runtime.Remoting.RemotingException
    [6600] Designer process terminated unexpectedly!
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.Primitives.ProcessDomainFactory.ProcessIsolationDomain.Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.IIsolationDomain.CreateInstance(String assemblyName, String assemblyCodeBase, String typeName)
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.Primitives.IsolationBoundary.Initialize()
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.Primitives.IsolationBoundary.CreateInstance[T](Type type)
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.IsolatedObjectFactory.Initialize()
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerHost.Services.VSIsolationService.CreateObjectFactory(IIsolationTarget isolationTarget, IObjectCatalog catalog)
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.IsolationService.CreateLease(IIsolationTarget isolationTarget)
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.IsolationService.CreateLease(IIsolationTarget isolationTarget)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.IsolatedDesignerService.CreateLease(IIsolationTarget isolationTarget, CancellationToken cancelToken, DesignerServiceEntry& entry, IServiceProvider serviceOverrides)
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.IsolatedDesignerService.IsolatedDesignerView.CreateDesignerViewInfo(CancellationToken cancelToken)
at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.IsolatedTaskScheduler.InvokeWithCulture[T](CultureInfo culture, Func`2 func, CancellationToken cancelToken)
       at Microsoft.VisualStudio.DesignTools.DesignerContract.Isolation.IsolatedTaskScheduler.<>c__DisplayClass10_0`1.<StartTask>b__0()
       at System.Threading.Tasks.Task`1.InnerInvoke()
       at System.Threading.Tasks.Task.Execute()

I have already tried the following:

    • Deleted the shadow cache and retried all over again ( creating a fresh project and opening XAML file)
    • Re-installed VS15 again

Results were the same. On checking out similar issues on the net, many talk about a particular environment variable (platform) to be removed in HP machines - since mine is Lenovo, I do not have any such env variable.

    Can somebody help me here?

PS: Similar question is also asked here: https://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/d074bccd-b314-4606-8883-32cb0f026560/xaml-designer-terminating-unexpectedly?forum=visualstudiogeneral, but this was for VS13 on Windows 8.1. The solution was to reinstall the OS itself - which is the last thing I want to do, because, as it is my installation (both OS and VS15) is fresh, and I have no reason to believe that reinstallation of OS will correct this problem.

    Thanks in advance,

    Regards,

    Arvind.

  • Hi Arvind Devarajan,

What project type do you create?

Please check whether do you have installed the latest version of Windows 10 SDK, Windows 8.1 and Windows phone 8.0/8.1 Tools, and the Universal Windows App Development Tools.

The Windows 10 SDK please download and install from https://dev.windows.com/en-us/downloads/windows-10-sdk

Windows 8.1 and Windows phone 8.0/8.1 Tools, please install from Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Visual Studio 2015 -> Change -> Modify. Please checked these two options and then install them.

In addition, please check whether you have enable XAML Designer in menu Tools -> Options -> XAML Designer tab.

    Best Regards,
    Weiwei

  • Hi Weiwei Cai,

Sorry for replying late, as I was also trying by other means on another channel. We finally decided also to check this out.

I did this: i.e., installed Windows 10 SDK - and here's the part of the installed program list from my control panel:

<Unable to insert picture of my installed-program-list here because the MSDN forum says my account is not verified yet :-(>

I also repaired the VS2015 installation by checking on both "Universal App development tools" and "Windows 8/8.1 tools" as you have marked above (In my case, "Universal app..." was already checked on - I just additionally checked on "Win 8/8.1 tools..." too). After having done that, and after the modification was completed, I started VS2015 to check if the problem had gone.

    Unfortunately, the problem remains.

Just thought I will also paste my "About VS 2015" info here so that you can check what components have been installed. I notice that I don't see Win10SDK in this - but I also do not know if that was what was expected (although, I had installed the same, as you can see in my installed-program-list above).

  • Hi Arvind Devarajan,

Do you have tried create other type project which is also used XAML designer, such as WPF, Silverlight, whether all of them also has this issue.

I have compared your installed list with mine, I also installed these options. Please try open your Visual Studio as administrator to check whether it is caused by the insufficient privileges.

If still doesn't work, I suggest you to repair your Visual Studio and then check again whether it can be fixed.

In addition, please check the ActiveLog.xml under the path of %AppData%\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0. This file will log all operations when you operate Visual Studio.

    Best Regards,
    Weiwei

  • Hi Weiwei Cai,

    (You can call me 'Arvind')

I have already tried repairing my installation (after all the steps above - i.e., after 'modifying'), and the result remains the same - the designer crashes. Also, I had (before the above modification and repairing) also started VS15 as an administrator and checked - with the same crash.

I shall try with other project types, check the ActiveLog.xml file, and get back if I find something interesting.

    Regards,

    Arvind.

  • Hi Weiwei Cai,

Interestingly we are one step better now! The problem seems to be happening only when I create UWP apps (even when I run as an administrator) - when I create a WPF app, it works fine - I am running VS15 as a normal user (i.e., not as an administrator).

Does this give you some hints on how we can correct the problem for UWP apps too?

    Thanks so far,

    Regards,

    Arvind.

  • Hi Arvind,

So the problem is just occurs with UWP apps. I think the problem is more related to your Windows 10 and Windows 10 SDK in Visual Studio.

I suggest you check whether there has any updates from menu Start -> Settings -> Update & Security -> Windows Update -> Check for Updates. If there has any updates for your Windows 10, please update to install them.

Then please check whether there has any update about Windows 10 SDK in your Visual Studio 2015. Please click the flag on right-top of Visual Studio and in the Notifications window, it will list all updates for Visual Studio.

If still doesn't work, please use http://aka.ms/vscollect  to gather the VS and .Net Frameowrk installation logs. After using it, you will find vslogs.cab from %temp% folder. Please upload the file to Onedrive and share the link here.

    Best Regards,
    Weiwei

  • Hi Wiewei,

    I did all these:
•Updated my Windows 10 (there were no updates - my system was already upto date - just checked if it were so)
•Updated my VS 2015 with all those items that were in my notification area (there were only some Azure tools update, which I felt was unrelated to the issue that we are now having - but I still updated.)
•Checked if the designer was working now - same result :-( It crashes.
•Uploaded the vslog.zip after running "collect" (there was no vslog.cab as you have mentioned, I assumed you meant vslog.zip). Here's the link to that you can access:

<Unable to share you the link, unfortunately, since my account is not yet verified. I just found out how to get my account verified soon, and have requested fissues at Microsoft to verify it ASAP so that I can share you the link. Until then, we might need to wait or find other means of sharing the file :-( >

Just to show my installed items after updation of VS15, here there are:

  • Hi Arvind,

Do you use the HP machine? If you use the HP machine, delete the "Platform" environment variable in System->Advanced System Settings->Environment Variables.

    Referfence:

    https://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/1625128/nullreference-exception-in-vs-2015-universal-windows-xaml-designer

Please turn on the Developer Mode on Settings -> Update and Security -> For Developers menu.

Deleting your shadow cache at C:\Users\{user}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\VisualStudio\14.0\Designer\ShadowCache, check it again.

    Thanks,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,

Thanks for your interest in helping me. I am using a Lenovo Yoga 500, and so 'platform' does not exist in my environment. I also had tried deleting my shadow cache. My first post above explains various other things that I tried before getting on to this forum...

PS: I also have 'developer mode' switched on in my system.

    Thanks,

    Arvind.

  • Hi Arvind,

Please try to use Process Monitor to find out the error when your get the error in designer. And go to Event Viewer to check whether there is error. If there has some errors, please share the error message here.

  • Hello Weiwei,

I ran the process monitor - and started the capture right when I started Visual Studio, and stopped the capture after the designer errored out with the exception.

On checking the process monitor log, I am unable to pin-point the problem - there seems to be many "Buffer overflows", "File not found", "Name not found", etc.

To make it simple for you to check, I have uploaded the PM log here, in its native format:

    https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=D35111D0EB373F20!125707&authkey=!APAg4CB1MNKrO_g&ithint=file%2cPML

Can you check which event is interesting for you, and I shall try to get event-logs exactly matching the time when the error occurred.

    Regards,

    Arvind.

  • Hi Arvind Devarajan,

    >>System.NullReferenceException
Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Not very sure that whether it is the same issue, I met some members got the same error during developing the uwp app before, they resolved this issue after updating the windows 10 to the latest version, I remember that it is the 10586 version. So just to make this issue clearly, whether you use the latest windows 10 version in your side?

    Thanks,

    Jack

  • Hi Jack,
I am running the latest version of Windows 10, updated as of last Saturday (build 10586). I believe that MS has released another bug-fix update yesterday - on Feb 9th - (bringing the build number to 10586.104) which i am yet to try. Also latest version of VS2015, with all updates installed.
Let me also update my Windows 10 to yesterday's update number and report back.
    Thanks!

    Arvind.

  • Hi Jack,

I now updated to the update released yesterday (10586.104), deleted shadow cache, and created a new UWP (blank) project.

The result is the same. Designer crashed, but this time with the original problem of demoting exception:

Seriously, I have tried all means to get to work ASAP, especially because this is my first foray into Windows programming, having already 20 years of love-affair with Linux programming. I am enjoying every-bit of getting this work for me, especially because I am always also used to something not working "out-of-the-box" on the other side (and I am not being sarcastic here). New technologies always have their fair bit of struggle, and the concept of UWP / Windows-store apps are pretty much new, anyways.

Thanks for your time again! I shall wait for the answers.

    Regards,

    Arvind.

  • Hello Weiwei,

Looks like there is no solution in sight for this?

Btw, in the meanwhile, I have switched to console and WPF application development to atleast get a hang of programming on Windows. I would anyway want to get to the UWP apps soon, as that is how Windows has gone already...

    Regards,

    Arvind.

  • Thanks to a lot of help from Microsoft, this issue was resolved. The resolution was a workaround, as this was a "known bug".

    This solution worked for me:
