SharePoint 255 Character Limit Error - what is a character? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi, i Have a client that is insisting on having long file names and multiple folders on a SharePoint site.

i Am trying to recreate the error that you sometimes get but typically i upload a file, edit it and all works 100%...

Now created a file with a very long file name and then i get the warning/error.

Hoe is this characters counted? On my first file i copied the url and it was about 380 characters and it still worked. With the long file name when i got the error it was over 800 characters.

  • For each special character, that character length is multiplied by three. I.E. '@' now turns into 3 characters into the URL. Count the number of special characters for the file that got uploaded with the file that didn't.

The above url will details on the limitations.

Internet Explorer also has limitations that. are separate from those in SharePoint Server 2010. Even though you make the SharePoint Server 2010 URL path shorter than the limitations, you might experience an Internet Explorer URL length limitation because of added parameters and encoding of the URL. You must use the most restrictive limitation as a guideline for planning URL lengths

  • Thanks for the replies...So if i copy and paste the url and the character count is over 255 i should get the error...It is only happening with over 350+ characters.

So in a url like this...does each character count as a character..even the GUID type numbers in the url?

i Know a "Space" gets counter at %20 so actually acts as 3 characters but that not really the question. (:
