EWF will not work after deployment.... RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just deployed windows embedded 7 standard to t5740e thinclients.

Everything is working except for changing the RAMDISK size and the EWF.

Everytime the EWF is set to enable and error message popups up and never enables.

Is there someway to restore EWF for Windows 7 embedded.

  • Did you setup EWF with RAM or RAMREG overlay?

  • If you try RAMREG what happens?

What is the boot media? CF? SATA Flash?

  • I am working on at HP THINCLIENT 5740E

The windows 7 standard embedded image is hosted on there website. Downloaded the image and deployed it to a thinclient for configuration.

After configuring the thinclient,  I copy and deploy the image, using imagex, to another thinclient. Everything works except EWF.

By default it is using RAM. Never tried RAMREG. Is there A special way of deploying an image with EWF working? I have tried all disabling commands.

Whats the advantage of RAMREG to RAM?

  • RAMREG vs RAM - RAM overlay requires another hiden partition, which is used for EWF volume information. RAMREG puts this information in the registry. No extra partition needed.

Did you do a sysprep before copy? Sysprep will role the image back and clear our the extra partition, which will be created by the clone on first boot.  The error you're seeing is what I would expect if sysprep wasn't used.

You might want to check with HP to get some help with the deployment.

  • Thanks for the knowledge above. How can change the RAM to RAMREG without destroying anything or is it possible?

Is there a certain option I need to change in the sysprep?

  • If you were building the image, I would suggest just to go back and rebuild with the proper setting. Maybe HP will do this for you, but I am wouldn't count on it unless you are ordering a big quantity.  There is a solution to do the change EWF on the fly:

    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/embeddedwindowseefs/thread/21904ab0-9efc-45c7-b49b-c0df0656579c

I have never tried this so you are on your own.

As far as sysprep, it gets a little tricky since you don't have the build tools. You will want to create an unattaned file. Here is some information:

  • When you deploy the image to a new system via ImageX,

then the Partition ID is changing and the EWF runs into troubles.

So reset the partition ID with following command in cmd (run as administrator):

    rundll32 ewfcfg.dll,EwfSysprepSpecialize

Then reboot the machine and try to enable the EWF.
