the most universal barcode symbology RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I am developing an asset management system which needs to print bar code labels for the asset item.

I am using a group id and item id to generate bard code with zero padding

    for example :

    Group ID: 7

    Item ID : 145

    Bar Code : 007000145

I would like to ask what's the best bar code symbology to use and which will be readable by most of the bar code readers /. apps?

    Thanks,
    Jassim

  • Free 3 of 9 (it's really free in price) is the easiest to implement barcode. You just print the digits in plain text surrounded by "*" and set the font to it. It is supported by any barcode readers on earth. Note that since it uses the "*" character to calibrate bar width, it doesn't work quite well on curved surface.

If you need things like check-digit, you'll have to look for other barcode schemes. Code 128 and UPC variants are supported by most barcode scanners, but you'll either need a library to use it (or you'll want to code them yourself. It's not very difficult when your schedule is not rushy)
