Forgotten Password

    Question

  • I have forgotten the local password on my Windows 8 tablet. That is the only account on the slate. How would I recover the tablet?

I wouldn't mind rebuilding the whole slate if possible either.

  • What to need to do is to edit your SAM (Security Account Manager) database located on your local drive. To do that you would need to boot from a bootable CD with SAM editor such as Offline NT Password and Registry Editor.

Here you may find a video tutorial on how you could use it.

Or, I think that would be much safer, you can reboot the PC and choose advanced options of the new boot manager. There should be an option to revert to a previous state.

Have a look at this article over at Steven Sinofsky's blog.

Additional info about using system recovery options in the new boot manager.

  • Thanks for the quick reply. I am talking about the Windows 8 tablets where there is no CD drive or advanced options at the boot up time. Would there be a USB option?
