Reading data from a local ODBC data source from Lightswitch RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a legacy Windows desktop program (written in vb.net) which I am updating to Lightswitch.  One of things I have to do is read/write data to a legacy accounting package (MYOB) via an ODBC connection.

I'm not clear now how I can access the ODBC connection from my Lightswitch program, even though I am in desktop mode?  Any thoughts?

  • Anton, you need to wrap-up the ODBC access into some form of 'service' that LightSwitch works well with.

Probably that will involve creating a custom WCF RIA service that LightSwitch can use. These days there is also advice to use WebAPI or OData, and there you create the service with a development technology of your choice.

The design decision is yours but if you seek further advice do be careful that it is not heavily biased.
