  • Hi Ralph,

    Thank you for your post.

I didn't receive the alert email from MSDN. Thus, I don't notice that you have one new concern. Sorry for that!

For error code "0x80070663" or "0x663", they mean "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

The update titled “Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 Family Update (KB959209)” updates computers that are running .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 with the latest compatibility fixes.
The update titled “Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847)” will upgrade computers with .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 to the latest version of the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, and will also apply KB959209.

Thus, since you have installed .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 on your machine, for your concern, I would suggest you to try to manually download Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 Family Update (KB959209) and install it. If any problem during the installation, please help me to follow the steps that I mentioned in the previous post to collect the log files for further troubleshooting.

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,
    Yichun Chen

  • Hello Yichun,

I apologize for the delay in following through with the help you recommended. I have emailed you the vslogs.cab file and results of the downloading and install of  Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 Family Update (KB959209).

Of the three files that comprise this update, I received a message saying that the first one failed (NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe). The other two, NDP30SP2-KB958483-x86.exe and NDP35SP1-KB958484-x86.exe installed successfully. I did make certain they were installed in the proper order.

Attached is for your inspection. I await your analysis.

As usual, your help is greatly appreciated.

    Regards,
    Ralph

  • Hi Ralph,

    Thank you for your reply.

I've looked into the log files that you posted and found the following error message:

    In Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0-KB958481_20100126_184347953.html:

Could you please help me to try Verification Tool to verify .NET Framework 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 on your machine? Please check the verification result from "Current Status".

If any .NET Framework cannot be verified successfully, your issue could be related to corrupted .NET Framework installation. You might try:
    - Use Cleanup tool to remove .NET Framework 3.5 >> 3.0 >> 2.0 in order
    - Download .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 (Full Package) and install it
    - Install Microsoft .NET framework 3.5 Family Update (KB959209).

Hope this helps! If you have any concern, please feel free to let me know.

    Best regards,
    Yichun Chen

  • Hi Yichun,

I uninstalled everything using the Cleanup tool in reverse order as was done in the past and reinstalled 1.1, 1.1 SP1 and 3.5 SP1. I used the Verifier Tool and it confirmed the status that all was installed properly. When I went to install the first file for the Family update, NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe, the install failed with the message "The installation failed with: This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Patch Package."

I then proceeded to trash, re-download and install the file 3 more times, all with the same message.

I seem to be stuck in the one spot and cannot proceed.

Where do I go from here?

    Thanks.

  • I struggled with this error for days. Turns out I needed to update the copy of Windows Installer on my system and then all the updates which had been failing to install now install without any problems!

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288 to get the Windows Installer update.

  • I had similar issue installing following .Net framework patches on Windows 2003 Server R2 SP2:

    NDP20SP2-KB958481-x86.exe
    NDP30SP2-KB958483-x86.exe
    NDP35SP1-KB958484-x86.exe

It was coming up with error "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package".

Installed Windows Installer v4.5 as the link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288, issue was resolved. After installation of Windows Installer v4.5, I was able to install above 3 KBs without any further issue.

Outage is required for Windows Installer v4.5.

  • Just want to add my 2 cents. I had the same problem in that i was unable to install the .NET updates.

Even downloading them individually, I would receive errors such as Installation failed with error code: (0x80070663). I followed the link to install the Windows Installer v4.5.

After installing the Installer update i was able to install the various .NET updates. Thank you for the advice.
