Hybrid Exchange network connectivity requirements RRS feed

  • Question

  • Would anyone be able to shed some light on this scenario, I've not managed to find any answers anywhere.

I'm planning a new hybrid setup with two Exchange 2016 servers on-prem.  These are in different physical locations but part of the same DAG with mailbox DBs synchronised between them.

I plan to set up one Exchange server as the hybrid and this will have the necessary ports and protocols open through the firewall for inbound/outbound connectivity to O365.

The 2nd server in the other location only  has network connectivity to the first Exchange server - i.e. it doesnt have outbound internet access.

My question is, will this work?

I know mail flow between on-prem and O365 will all go through the hybrid server so dont anticipate any issues there.
However I'm not sure if any processes such as free/busy lookups from O365 users to on-prem users would fail, or if there's anything else that would require the 2nd server to talk to Office 365 directly.
