Operating System versions: What does "K" and "N" mean? RRS feed

  • Question

  • In the download area, what is the difference between "Windows 7 Ultimate N with Service Pack 1 (x86) - DVD (English)" and "Windows 7 Ultimate with Service Pack 1 (x86) - DVD (English)".  In other words, what does the "N" mean?  I've also seen "K" and "KN".  What do they mean?

  • Microsoft was compelled to sell versions of Windows without Windows Media Player in accordance with the European Union Sanctions levied upon Microsoft for violating Anti-Trust Laws - these are the "N" versions.
In a similar case in Microsoft was found guilty in violation of it's Anti-trust law by the South Korean government and was mandated to sell version "K" which contains some changes like the inclusion of competitive instant messaging and media player software. Verision "KN" contains no Windows Media Player at all.
