Can't install Windows Developer Preview

    Question

  • I have tried several times, and redownloaded the .ISO file, bu without luck so far.

If I try to boot from an USB drive or a DVD containing installation files it gets stuck showing the text 'Windows Developer Preview' and a circle of dots spinning. If I start the installation from Windows it appears to be fine, as it begins copying files, but when the computer restarts, it gets stuck on that same screen.

My computer has a processor AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (2.4 GHz), 1.5 GB of DDR RAM, a Nvidia GTS 250 (1 GB memory) and Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits, that runs without problems.

  • And now there are three boot options: Windows 7 (that leads to the old windows system); Windows Setup (endless loading); and Windows Developer Preview (again endless loading).

The 'Windows Setup' leads to C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\WINDOWS

The 'Developer Preview' leads to C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Windows.NEW\WINDOWS

The folder $WINDOWS.~BT seems to have been created during the installation.

    Hi Hispanio,

I guess you are still not getting a graphic WDP Boot loader since the boot order you mention above appears to have the Windows7 as the default OS at #1, the WDP would have been the default OS had you completed the installation.

Please try to repair the Windows7 OS using F8* after you have selected it in your boot manager but not actually clicked/hit Enter to start it. You may try the various options to repair it. Once you are successfully through with Windows7, you may try to repair/install your WDP using a similar method.
If unsuccessful, you may insert your Windows7 DVD/USB and boot from it, ensure to click repair options under Advanced Options.
*Please note that F8 option does not work in WDP boot manager so you should have Windows7 as your default OS to get the traditional dual boot manager in order for F8 to work.

  • It could be issue with your BIOS, try visit your manufacturer website and download and install latest version of BIOS. Note that for BIOS you should ONLY download it from manufacturer's website and read the steps to installation carefully and before that back up your data.

Also could you provide use with the model and manufacturer of your PC?

  • My computer is a HP Pavilion media center m7430.es

  • When you boot off of the ISO, during setup, select Shift+F10 to open a command prompt window and find the setuperr.log and setupact.log files.  They will be in the \Windows\Panther directory but that directory location can vary based on where in the install process you actually are.  I would look over the setuperr.log file first to see if we've flagged any outright problems there, otherwise, look over the setupact.log to see what the setup engine was doing when the problem occurred.

  • The problem is that, if booting from the ISO, there is no setup, it gets stuck in this screen:

and no setup appears asking for languaje, partitions or anything, so I can't open the command prompt.

  • You can download the Microsoft File Checksum Integrity Verifier from the following location:
    http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=11533
Read the Readme file for instructions on the command prompt utility.

Then on the computer that you downloaded the Windows Developer Preview, you can check the SHA-1 value and see if the download
could be corrupted. If the checksum doesn't match the correct value, then download again and burn to DVD.

This is the Windows Developer Preview Sha 1 hash - 6FE9352FB59F6D0789AF35D1001BD4E4E81E42AF

Then try your installation again and see if it completes.

  • I have checked, and the ISO file is fine. It even installs correctly on a virtual machine, so there has to be another problem.

  • Odd, one thing you might want to do is remove all connected devices from the machine and see if the ISO boots without them.  Could be something polling thats causing the installation to hang.

  • Try run system disk check, one possibility is that you might have bad sector in your hard disk and when Windows copy file bad sector prevent it from write or read.

Have you tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete in that state?

  • To joscon:

I have unplugged everything except the keyboard and the monitor, and it doesn't solve the problem.

    To d'AJ:

I have tried what you said, without effect, it does the same thing again.

    To Cyber_Defend_Team:

I have run the disk check, and it does not show any error.

    To Robert Aldwinckle:

No key combination works in that screen, it just keeps loading (or whatever it does)

  • Hi, I have the same problem. The installation of Windows Developer Preview seems to work in the first place - after reboot the start screen, see above, shows up, but after a few seconds the screen turns black. I installed the preview on D:\ an I fixed the C:\ Partition (fixboot) for Windows XP Professional on C:\ so I can read the files in D:\

Everything looks fine, so I suppose the system is running, but the video driver doesn't work. I don't have an setuperr.log, only an seuptact.log:

  • I just found the setuperr.log - it has 0 bytes. The devices on my machine: mainboard Gigabyte 990 XA-UD3, AMD 850 X2 (Phenom), ATI HD5570,  and USB-DVD.

Is there a way to replace the graphics driver?

  • Hello mapr0003,

you may try Alt+Ctrl+Del to open the Task Manager, Click on File and then New Task Run, type mmc compmgmt.msc

in the Run box to open the Device Manager, and then try to update your Graphic driver from there. You may down load the most recent Windows7/WDP driver from the manufacturer's site, choose the second option to update the driver by selecting Browse my computer for driver software, browse to the downloaded driver and install it. In case of compatibility issues in installing it, please try this link.
