Windows 8 RTM: Final cost RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • Total newbie question but I'm a Mac/iOS developer who is exploring developing Metro apps for Windows 8. I downloaded the 90-day trial version of Windows 8 and Visual Studio Express 2012 but I'm wondering how much it is going to cost to upgrade to a full version that doesn't expire? I can't figure this out. Do I need to buy an MSDN subscription (Visual Studio Professional with MSDN is $1200 and comes with Windows 8, do I ultimately need to buy this?) or can I learn how to develop apps now and just buy Windows 8 when it eventually comes out? I can't figure out if Visual Studio Express 2012, which I downloaded for free, is going to eventually require a purchase.

    Thanks in advance.

  • In addition to buying Windows 8, you will need a Windows Store developer account which is $49/year.  Visual Studio Express 2012 is now and will be free.  It is sufficient to develop apps for the store.  The license for VS Express 2012 seems to expire every 30 days or so but can be easily renewed for free.
