Bing V7, what will happen to it? RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • We are in the process of upgrading to V8, but are experiencing some delays in getting everything working. What is the future of V7? How long will it still work? We have a lot of moving parts on V7 that we are trying to get working on V8. If V7 stops working that will be a major pain point (especially with the shortcomings of V8 not resolved). Can someone please explain the timeline of V7 functionality?

  • On July 1st, some of the features of V7 will be disabled, primarily birdseye and the search module. The reason for this is that V8 has a new data set of birdseye imagery and the contracts for the old data expire at the end of June. The search module in V7 uses an old SOAP service which needs to be turned off for various reasons. At this time the rest of V7 is expected to stay online temporarily to allow for extra migration time, however it will ultimately be taken offline and the URL will likely be redirected to V8. Timelines for when V7 will be turned off is not being communicated at this time, but assume it is sooner rather than later.

Looking through past threads with you, it looks like the main issue you are waiting to be resolved is with rendering multiple tile layers and changing the visibility causes other layers to disappear then reappear.

  • That's correct. On V7 we will add multiple png tile layers (5 or more layers is not uncommon). We dynamically toggle on/off these layers, adjust color palettes/transparency, etc.  As it stands now, our V8 solution reloads every tile layer anytime a tile layer adjustment is made (adding a new layer, hide existing layer, show existing layer, change/adjust layer). Is improving the layer reload behavior on the roadmap?

For my particular situation, if V7 Search and birdseye view are disabled, that would not have an impact.

  • The currently plan is to disable the V7 search module and birdseye on the 1st of July. For those who need these who see this thread; Bing Maps V8 already has a search module. Birdseye is now available in V8 through the experimental branch and will be added to the main release branch in a couple weeks. However, V8 uses all new imagery for birdseye and only about 25% of it has been processed so far. More imagery will be released frequently over the next several months.

  • The search module in V7 uses an old SOAP service which needs to be turned off for various reasons.

Does that go for the rest of the SOAP services, too, or just that particular one?

P.S.  Might be worth a sticky topic now that the plans are set.

  • The SOAP services will also stop being supported on July 1st. Not sure if they will be turned off completely or in parts then.

An email is planned to go out soon to those on V7 which I believe will include details on the plans.
