is there a convention for "missing values" RRS feed

  • Question

  • In merging CCD style documents into HealthVault from different healthcare systems, I'm running into the issue of "missing values" in the form or zero length character arrays.  These are rejected by HealthVault as invalid values for their data type.  In all cases they are for unimportant values which I don't really care about.  Or if I do care, I'd rather deal with them after they're imported.

Through trial-and-error I've come up with several different values to substitute for the empty char arrays and gotten HealthVault to import them.  I'd rather use a standard "missing" or "default" value.  Is there one?  What's the preferred method for handling this?

  • In general, with CCD documents when you want to specify an empty value you need to use the nullFlavor attribute and indicate why the value is missing. See the CCD or C32 implementation guide from HL7 for more details on how to use this attribute.
