Excel Automation unable to open xlsb Error 1004 (Extension wrong or file corrupt) RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have an Access Database with an xlsb file in one of the tables.  To do several calculations on the data we have, using VBA we extract the Excel file from the database, open it and populate it with data, then save the calculated values in the database.  This is a split database, where the data file sits on a central server and each client machine has the forms and everything.  Every client machine is able to do this process except for one.  The client machines are identical running Office 2007.  When the client machine attempts to open the file in Excel it gets run-time error 1004 "Excel cannot open the file 'xxxx.xlsb' because the file format or file extension is not valid.  Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."

We tried opening an empty xlsb file in Excel, that worked fine.  We tried opening the Excel file manually and that worked... But, it opened as read-only, which none of the other systems do.  I suspect this might be the issue, but I'm not sure what needs to be done to fix this.  Any suggestions?
