Unable to create a table in sql server 2012 database using server explorer in vs 2012 rc. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I already submitted a bug report about this but ms cannot reproduce this, seems like they don't know what code it their product triggers this error message. (This was with beta, same problem with rc)

    see http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/737090/table-designer-for-mdf-databases-does-not-work-in-visual-studio-2012-rc-ultimate-all-updates

Adding the sql database works fine so does setting up a dataset. However when adding a table to the database, visual studio initially shows this loading message (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40310274/vs11-Bug-1.jpg). Eventually it fails and shows an error message (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/40310274/vs11-Bug-2.jpg).

Thinking it may be a configuration problem, I completely reinstalled Windows 8 CP and VS 11 Beta and updated to sql 2012 RTM (from RC0 included with vs 11) and had the same issue again. My visual studio installation has the april update and the same issue was present before the update.

Visual studio 2010's table designer works fine on the same machine with SQL 2008 R2 Express.

    CPU: Intel Atom n270 1.6Ghz
    Memory: 2048 Mb
Graphics: Intel 945 Express Chipset (GMA 950)

Note: On another machine (with a more powerful processor) running Windows 7 and not 8 this issue is absent. Although the designer takes time to load.

Can someone please please help me as this is a huge show stopper, or how can I use the server explorer of vs 2010 with sql 2k12 if that doesn't work.

  • Two engineers analyzed the log but we weren't able to interpret any data.  Since we can't reproduce this issue or gleam any insight from the log, we are closing investigation of this issue.  Keep in mind that you can use VS 2010 to workaround the behavior-- sorry for any inconvenience.  Do let us know if you can provide concrete repro steps for us and we'll reopen investigation.

  • Hi LunaLovelace,

I've followed up in the connect bug with instructions to generate a log of the event so that we can investigate further.

Tthe SSDT team has tried several times to reproduce the issue you've described and haven't been successful with the information provided.  If you have more information that would help us to reproduce the issue on our side, please let us know.

  • Our team is now investigating the log you provided and I'll let you know the outcome.

To workaround this behavior, keep in mind that you can still edit the script portion of the table in the current table designer or you could use VS 2010 SP1 table designer in Server Explorer.

    Thanks,

    Janet Yeilding
