Question

I recently created a new project in visualstudio online for testing purpose and get familiar with tfs online. Now I would like to delete the project. I don't see any option on the interface that will allow me to do this. can someone walk me through? Thank you

Hi jaydee,
To delete a project:
1. From your account's home page, go to the control panel.
2. Under Administration tasks, choose View the collection administration page.
3. Delete the project.

That doesn't seem to work. Is there a reason "Delete" is grayed out? I am the Administrator of the project.

I had the same issue. Here is how to delete a Project via the command line:
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/81997146-a64f-43fb-9952-57d71542cd11/how-to-delete-a-team-project-from-your-visual-studio-online-account?forum=TFService
That article actually links back to this thread in the beginning.

- Click on the uppermost parent in the control panel, named "DefaultCollection".
- Press the last option, named "View the collection administration page"
- Click on the arrow icon or right mouse-click on a project to delete it.
PS the reason the projects are grayed out in their administration is because if you would have deleted it there, nasty errors would have popped up because many paths wouldn't have existed after deletion.
Read the answers well next time ;)

FINALLY! Thank you so much Esther! Your instructions (specifically step #2) finally made it obvious WHERE to go to delete a project. No other "answers"/"instructions" identified that one had to go to "View the collection administration page".Friday, January 24, 2014 6:04 PM

If the settings gear has a menu, it is not available to me (this is the only account).Friday, January 24, 2014 9:11 PM

@DevWheel : if you are logged on to your "https://your_id.visualstudio.com/.visual" account then on the top right corner of the page, you will see your name and next to it the gear. when you click on it, you should go to a URL like this : "https://your_id.visualstudio.com/_admin#path=DefaultCollection&_a=node"
Under administration tasks, you will see a link to ""View the collection administration page"
Click on that link and then you will see a list of your projects
if you hover just to the left of any project you SHOULD get a down arrow for a pull down menu that allows you to delete the project.

In the "View the collection administration page", you actually must first left click the project to make it active, and then you can see the arrow (menu, which includes the delete command) on the active project.
Although I appreciate the "minimalistic design", it is important that to give user a hint (Look, here is a menu!) when they visit the page. Not all the users have the paitience to try to find the hidden function on the page.

What if there is no arrow icon when hovering to the left of the project? I am an administrator.Wednesday, May 14, 2014 3:38 PM

Click on it anyway - it should show. Wow, this is as intuitive as a rock to the head.Wednesday, June 11, 2014 7:47 PM

@chrisdudes, the dashboard will appear different in each browser, so it may not be as "intuitive as a rock to the head" as you may think, so no need for that comment.
Here are the steps:
1) After logging into the portal, click on the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen. This will take you to the control panel.
2) Under the Administration task section, click on the View the collection administration page link.
3) You will see all of the projects with their name and description. Click on the description of the project you want to remove, and it will highlight the row. You will also see the down arrow appear to the left of the project name column.
4) Click on the arrow and then click delete.

True as of Dec 2014
See steps above, just to really emphasise step 3:
Hover around the empty space before the project name icon, then a drop down arrow will appear (not sure if this is a CSS bug, but Microsoft are known to employ the world's worst UX people, so it might be by design that you can't work the product).
Drop it down. Delete.

Sorry, that's a load of apologist rubbish and he makes a very good point. It isn't his responsibility to test Microsoft's user interface in the other popular browsers they should already be targeting and testing for.
The drop down arrow won't appear in the latest Firefox, a browser which you will agree has a pretty fair market share, unless you:
a) Get lucky and happen to hover over the tiny drop down arrow control itself
b) Click anywhere in the Project Name bar of the project you wish to deleteEven once visible, mousing over the button gives no indication to the user that it *actually does anything* unless you click it. Maybe a little CSS love to underline the down-arrow on mouseover or something? This is, frankly, appalling interface design from Microsoft, and his initial comment stands.

Thanks for this answer. I wish the site was more intuitive. This works for me on 3/16/2016.
